Racial/Unconscious Bias training

Dear Human Resources:

I am the owner of a small restaurant with about 10 employees. I heard about the situation that happened with Starbucks, and it has me thinking about whether I should have some type of training for my employees. I won’t be able to shut down the restaurant for a day of training, and for the most part, my employees are cordial and respectful to everyone. Since I’m such a small company compared to Starbucks, is this really something that I need to be concerned about?

That is a great question, thanks for reaching out! Since the “Starbucks situation”, we have had a lot of people contact us with questions about training for their employees, particularly Racial and Unconscious Bias training. Racial / Unconscious Bias training is about educating employees about the unconscious notions that people hold in regards to other races. This training highlights assumptions that are made and how to navigate away from them and treat everyone fairly.  Therefore, our recommendation is, no matter how small your company size, Racial / Unconscious Bias training is worthwhile and necessary. As the owner, it can give you peace of mind that you have prepared your employees and that they will understand the best way to interact with each other and your customers. This training also helps employees to understand themselves better and can give them the tools to work on bettering themselves as members of society. There is no expectation that you shut down your restaurant for a day of training and everyone can benefit from this training, even if they already seem cordial.
